I give the scared kid in question some harmless toy "weapon" (foam-rubber baseball bat, plastic sword, toy hammer, or whatever), and tell them, "There ARE no monsters in your closet. Monsters are imaginary. But if you're still worried, remember: every monster you can kill, you get to EAT. What kind of sauce do you think would taste best on monster? Barbecue? Honey mustard?" They usually smile at this point--because it's taken them from the attitude of "I am a helpless little prey animal, waiting to get eaten," to "I am in control, and I can DO something about this!"
