ideas for non verbal preschooler

11/03/2009 20:53
Current mood:
he can hear, he can understand, language is very delayed...he had seizures when he was born that he outgrew...he was on VERY heavy meds until 9 months old, he is caught up with everything but speech and some fine motor (the fine motor because we haven't thought to work with him on it before)...he is very destructive..i think he's bored honestly...i want to do more organized things with him, give him some individual attention (or at least while wearing a baby attention) and start him on some basic school skills...colors, letters, numbers, etc....we do some signing, so we'll continue with that, and we are just now beginning potty training (could use some tips on training a stubborn boy as well if you have them, jayden was stubborn but not like this and she was done by now!)...so i'll learn the signs to the basic activity (color, number, letter, action, etc) and teach the sign along with the spoken word and do some activity (coloring, cutting, pasting, etc) with him...so that leads me to the need for suggestions...what kinds of things do you do with your preschooler? i've never homeschooled a preschooler...james was in p.s. for preschool (at about the age of 4 on) and jayden was in daycare where she learned basics (so was james until he went to p.s, i used to work) and then went to p.s preschool at age 4/5....i don't want it to be too much to begin with, or for it to take too long to accomplish (he's got a pretty short attention span...i'm wondering about adhd when he gets older, but we'll see how/if he mellows out as he ages) and i want to lay a good foundation for doing school work as he gets older...thanks for any help you can give...oh, he has a lazy eye (we have an appt on friday for a referral to a specialist about it) so i don't know how well he can see right now, so i don't want anything that is too detail oriented and definately something that doesn't require a whole lot of feedback from him...he listens but he doesn't often respond
