Bonnie, 40, 4 kids, um, starting next week, I think. We meet with ds's kindergarten teacher today but I'll be really surprised if we hear something that makes us decide to keep him in the public school. We were planning to start homeschooling next year with dd for 3rd grade.

Michelle (38) with 5Boys. start with our 1st in 1996 added 2nd, 3rd, & 4th before putting them back in Public School with supplemental Home Stuff. Then two years ago, I pulled my 3rd, 4th, & 5th out of school and brought them back home. This year DS 3 placed a year early into 9th grade Public school where his older brothers go. He decided that he loved there science programs, honors classes and such so he went back to Public School. Youngest two are still home and so far neither wants to go back.

good luck with the choice..it took us a couple of years to make the final decision to pull the kids out as well..james was struggling pretty badly and it kept getting worse...we moved and changed districts and it didn't help and things weren't great for jayden either and that was the final straw...

I am new to homeschooling. Someone from the local homeschooling group recommended that we join the HSDLA, because we will be pulling our ds out of public school to homeschool at the end of this school year. $115 for a year membership isn't easy to come by, but if it really is necessary, we could manage it. What do you all recommend?

We did just pull our 5 yr old ds out of kindergarten, but state law says compulsory attendance starts at age 7, however my daughter (typo before) is currently attending public school and we will pull her out after she finishes 2nd grade.

Thanks a lot for the input. You are right, even on the HSLDA website they say you can join because you have an emergency, so we will definitely wait and do some more research.

i didn't join...i also live in michigan which is VERY homeschool friendly..i just had to call the school and say "my kids won't be there this year, we are homeschooling" and that was the end of it...we have enough therapists coming in and out the "check" on us and the progress that the kids make, but even then, the state would have to show that we aren't attempting to teach them which they wouldn't go through the trouble to do unless there was other stuff going on because it'd be a huge expense and the burden of proof would be on them

i'm sorry, i'm no help really, james PREFERS to be handed his work and left to his own devices...as it is, he and jayden can't do their work at the same time...she needs to talk to herself to get through it and that is VERY distracting to james and just makes him angry and annoyed
