Disney & Universal Orlando
Disney & Universal Orlando - Originally posted by Music Mom

We did Disney, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Universal Orlando with 5 kids in Feb. We are DVC members and stayed at the Saratoga Springs Resort. It was very nice but in the future we would like to try the Animal Kingdom Resort. We had a suite with 3 beds, 2 pack & plays (they provide) and a washer & dryer and full kitchen which is soooo helpful.
It was a challenge with a 14, 12, 9, 1 yr old and 5 month old. We took my parents to help with the babies because it was hard to please everyone with such a range of ages. I had been to Disney 4 times previously so I knew the park but this was the first time with kids. We knew our babies would never remember such a trip but we were going for the older three. We became DVC (Disney Vacation Club) members knowing we would return when the babies were older.

My honest opinion--I know they say that Disney is for all ages BUT I think that the perfect ages for kids to do Disney is 6-10. They can walk the long distances and they can go on all of the rides. My 14 & 12 year old are rollar coaster lovers and so they were underwhelmed by Disney World rides. They still enjoyed it but they liked Universal much more.

Disney is very expensive and I think it has priced the middle income family out. If you are going to spend so much money make sure your children are at the right age to remember it and take advantage of it--that is why I think 6-10 is a great age. The service everywhere you go is excellent and it is very impressive how hard they try to cater to families and all of their needs. The food is marginal--it should be better for the price you are paying!

By far the most ideal time to go is in the fall from Labor Day to Thanksgiving and in Jan & Feb. The crowds are less and the weather is cooler--esp in Jan & Feb. The high season is the summer with the 4th of July being the busiest time. I cannot image going to Disney in the crowds, heat and humidity with little ones in July.

In retrospect I do not think there is a "cheap" way to do Disney. Even if you camped it would be expensive with so many hidden costs. This is the type of vacation you save for and splurge--it is NOT a budget vacation.

Universal Studios is geared more toward the teen/adult crowd. There are still fun areas for little ones like the Cat in the Hate Area, ET, Barney & Curious George Area. Because Universal was smaller and less crowded (in Feb) it seemed more relaxed & we had more fun. The water rides were a HUGE hit and my roller coaster loving kids were thrilled!
