Vidalia Onion Chopper Vidalia Onion Chopper (As Seen on TV) - Originally posted by Mirz
There are a lot of infomercials, and I can't tell you how many times I have been hooked into buying one of those gadget, only to sorely regret the purchase, and find it sitting in my closet collecting dust. That's not the case with the onion chopper. The one I bought was the original Progressive model that was sold on television (though I got it from another online store). There are now several other knock-offs out there that are essentially the same.
The gadget consists of a large plastic cup/container. A plastic piece containing a blade slips into it. The top part acts as a lid, but also as a lever which pressed the onion down onto and through the blade. The result is diced onions in mere seconds, and with a minimum of tears. The chopper also works well on other firm vegetables like carrots and celery. I have even used it on firm tomatoes when making salsa (though it's not adviseable for softer veggies--yuck).
The main use in my kitchen, however, is for the onions. We use onions for tons of dishes, and like to have chopped onions on hand for hot dogs, etc. It's a great time-saver to be able to dice an onion in a matter of seconds. What I find myself doing is getting a bag of onions and dicing them all at once. I keep a big bowl of the onions in the fridge, and freeze the rest for stews and other cooked dishes.
The version I bought came with two different sized blades. A regular dice, and "finely" diced. I think the gadget works better on the regular dice. The finely diced is neat, but a bit difficult to do--you need a lot of pressing power, so I usually have my husband do it. Another minor drawback is that in the lid part, pieces of skin and onion can get caught between the "teeth." Mine came with a tool to get them out. It works okay. I actually do better with a paring knife. Just be sure to rinse it really well after use, and it's usually not a big problem.
I got mine for $20, but I've seen them for cheaper. It's worth the price. I love this handy chopper, and I would highly recommend it. I give it:
