Welcome to the Cooking Challenge. This is our bi-monthly game where we present a cooking task to the community and see what happens. Anyone can play. However, if you have a blog or a website, you can link to the challenge and will be listed on our "roll-call" of sites playing along.

Be sure to acquaint yourself with the rules, listed below. Or, if you've played before, jump to the current Challenge!

What are the Rules?

Each challenge will have it's unique rules and guidelines. However, there are general rules that must be followed for all games:

  • First, you must follow the directions! Each challenge will have particular instructions to make it both challenging and fun and we require each play to adhere to them.

  • Two, you must be able to take a picture of your final creation. We know this may be difficult for some people. You don't need to post it on the web. If you can get a copy in digital format, you can email it to us and we will post it. Note: You don't have to take pictures during the process, unless you want to. You just need a picture of the final product.

  • Three, be fair! Give credit where credit is due. If you enter the contest using someone else's recipe or work, please note it.

  • Four, have fun! This is not a dog-eat-dog contest (unless the challenge has to do with hot dogs). This is just a fun way for us to get creative and expand our cooking skills. While we will pick a winner, the fact we are all participating is the best reward of all.
Did you say winner?

Yep, that's right. Of the participants, we will pick our favorite entry. Of course, if you win a contest, you would expect a prize. Since we are poor moms eeking out a living, we can't award anything monetary. But we do have this nifty graphic that you can proudly display on your blog, website, or in your forum sigline.

How do I enter?

Several ways. This game is a joint venture by CookingWithAnne.com and LotsOfKids.com, so you can participate through either site.

  1. You may post your entry on your blog or website and send us a link.

  2. Email us your submission (with an attachment of a picture of the final product).

  3. Post your entry in the comments section of Anne's Blog.

  4. Post your entry in the Lotsofkids.com Household forum or on the LOK Full-House Blog.
That's all there is to it! Good luck! Oh, and you'll find the current challenge listed below.

Our June 2008 Challenge!

Dollar Store Challenge: Meal for 4 for $15 or less

Our second challenge was originally given to Chef Eric Ripert, who cooks at one of the finest restaurants in New York City, He was recently put up to the challenge of creating several dishes on a budget with food purchased from the Dollar store. We've decided to take the same challenge and see what everyone comes up with. Your challenge is to go to your local Dollar Store to shop on a budget with no more than $15 to create a meal that could be served to four people. The meal should consist of an appetizer, entree, and dessert.

Here are the rules/restrictions:

  1. You must use dry goods and pantry items only. Some Dollar Stores have cold cases and freezer sections, however those items will not be eligible. Canned foods count as pantry items, so you may use those.

  2. There have been other versions of this challenge on other blogs/sites which allowed participants to shop at discount food stores. We're being a bit more sticky her--it must be a Dollar Store type store, or any other general merchandise store that sells discounted food products (if you don't have a technical Dollar Store in your area).

  3. This must be a whole meal, including appetizer, entree and dessert. It must feed for 4 people. Nobody will get extra points for making their $15 stretch to feed more than 4 or for adding another course. It MUST be three courses for 4 people only.

  4. Contest runs June 4 through June 30, 2008.
Good luck to all the participants! The Winner will be announced on July 2nd!
