Creating/Saving Blinkies

Note: This tutorial was created using a version of PaintShopPro. Most graphics programs have similar commands to accomplish the same thing.

Please also note: This tutorial is graphic intense and therefore the page may take a few minutes to load. If you are on dial-up or a slow ISP, you can view a text-only version by clicking here.

1. The first step is to make your blinkie. The cursor will appear as a finger. Simply put your mouse over the piece you want, hold down the left mouse button, and drag the piece into one of the white areas. Each piece is dragged seperately, which allows you to reposition them just the way you want. Once you have the blinkie just the way you want it, you need to save the image to your computer's clipboard. Do this by pressing the "Print Screen" button. It is normally located above the "Insert" key (and right of the F12 key) on most keyboards..

2. Load your graphics program. Use the "paste" function to bring up the saved image in the program. Note: Remember that you saved the whole page as an image, so don't be alarmed if the image is big.

3. Locate the blinkie on the page. Using the "crop" tool, cut down the picture.

4. If you want to make an animated gif (or if you will be displaying the image on a page with a background color other than white), you need to save the image with a tranparency. To do this, make the background a color different than any of the colors in the image. Then follow your paint program's directions for applying a transparency. Save your image as a .gif and you're done!
